About Us

Our Story

Mil-Spec Magnetics, Inc. was founded in 1990 by Shelly and Tony Gunewardena, who left their engineering positions at reputable magnetics companies to pursue a shared vision of building their own company focused on quality, innovation, and solving the industry’s most difficult magnetics challenges. Tony led production control and engineering operations, while Shelly managed finance and engineering support, a partnership that became the foundation of the company’s success.

From the beginning, Mil-Spec Magnetics developed a reputation as a problem-solving manufacturer, taking on highly technical and demanding projects that many companies could not, or would not, attempt. Through the development of specialized tooling, fixtures, and manufacturing methods, the company established a number of proprietary processes that remain unique within the industry today. Among the most notable are perfect layer winding and void-free encapsulation techniques, capable of working with wire as fine as 48 AWG, which is approximately four times thinner than human hair.

The company began in a modest 3,000 square foot leased facility and quickly expanded into 2 neighboring units as demand grew. In 2002, after continued growth and rising lease costs, Shelly and Tony purchased a building located in Pomona, California. Following construction and facility buildout, Mil-Spec Magnetics moved into the new location, which served as the company’s home for the next 24 years.

In 2012, as the company continued to grow, additional facilities were needed, which led to the acquisition of the building across the street from our main Pomona facility. While the expansion provided much-needed manufacturing space, operating across multiple buildings created logistical inefficiencies between production, engineering, quality, and management teams. It was then that the long-term vision was galvanized; bringing the entire operation together under one roof again.

In February 2026, Mil-Spec Magnetics completed its transition into a new 32,000 square foot facility located at 1165 E Edna Pl. Covina, California, marking the next chapter in the company’s continued growth and commitment to manufacturing excellence.
